The Los Angeles Section of the Society of Women Engineers sponsors an annual scholarship program. Scholarships are open to women in undergraduate and graduate engineering programs at USC, UCLA, Caltech, Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly Pomona, Harvey Mudd, or Loyola Marymount. Women considered to be re-entry students in an engineering program are also eligible, as well as those who have been awarded other scholarships and/or previous Society of Women Engineers scholarships.
Freshmen/Sophomore, Junior/Senior, and Graduate applications will be judged separately, as applicable, based on the applications received. Graduating Senior applicants will be required to provide evidence of graduate school admission for the fall. Senior applicants who are graduating and not attending graduate school in the fall are not eligible.
In general, a successful applicant must demonstrate high academic ability and show a keen interest in her professional development in the engineering field by participating in technical organizations, holding leadership positions, conducting research projects, or pursuing engineering or non-engineering related work opportunities. She is a problem solver, a committed doer, and an effective communicator. She should be an example to other students as a potential leader, both technically and socially. Special consideration will be given to those with unique circumstances and financial need.
The amount awarded each year varies depending upon the donations and applications received. In past years, the reward amount has been between $500 and $1,500 per recipient.
All completed applications, including supportive materials, must be submitted electronically or postmarked no later than Friday, February 22, 2013. The scholarship committee will review all applications and conduct interviews in March. Award recipients will be notified by April 8. Scholarships will be awarded at the SWE-LA Professional Development Conference/Scholarship Recognition Luncheon on April 26, 2013.
